Every year I enjoy making this rink in my backyard to play hockey on. This year I thought it would be a neat idea to make a time lapse of the process of getting the rink put together. While starting to play hockey in kindergarten I would always use the pool in my backyard to ice skate on every single winter. It doesn’t require as much effort to get set up, but the demensions are smaller. This rink is 50 feet by 30 feet, and is located in Massachusetts.

But success, once it arrived, paled quickly for him. He told the editors of Saturday Review that he was “good and sick” of seeing his photograph on the dust jacket of “The Catcher in the Rye” and demanded that it be removed from subsequent editions. He ordered his agent to burn any fan mail.

With all the time he had by himself, though, Salinger also became known for his letter-writing, much of which reflected his disgust for the outside world.  So, you could imagine that when someone approached him about doing a movie adaptation of “Catcher and the Rye,” his response was not exactly friendly.  The following is from the fantastic blog Letters of Note:

Ever since its release in 1951, a steady stream of eager producers, directors, screenwriters and actors have unsuccessfully attempted to bring J. D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye to the big screen, all falling at the first hurdle when confronted with Salinger’s resolute refusal to sell the rights to his novel. The letter below, written in 1957 in response to an enquiry from a Mr. Herbert (and currently for sale here), is a perfect example of the opposition faced and provides an entertaining glimpse at the author’s reasoning.

In a post on his blog entitled “Norma Rae”, Michael Ian Black jumps into the discussion surrounding the Conan stituation but sees it from a different angle than most others have, and I kind of find it refreshing - well, at least a lot more refreshing than the jokes he makes on VH1’s “Top 25 Sexiest Videos of the 2000’s,” which is just about the only place you see him these days:*

“How did a Harvard-educated, multi-millionaire late night talk show host magically transmogrify into a guy who got laid off at the local car plant? The overreaction to Conan’s departure has been kind of astounding; as a nation, are we really that concerned about who hosts “The Tonight Show,” a television program that stopped being culturally relevant around 1986?

And let’s not forget, it’s not as if Conan was cancelled. He quit. He walked away from “The Tonight Show” because he rightly or wrongly felt that moving the show half an hour later would destroy the show’s integrity. Okay, fine. But let’s not act as if he’s leading a sit-in at a segregated lunch counter. It’s not that big a deal.”
