As a protest in response to HBO recently taking Flight of the Conchords down from their “On Demand” selections, I am putting various funny FOTC links and videos on my blog.Assholes.Anyway, first, the vidz:

The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room

Probably the most-recognized, best-written and most catchy of all of the FOTC songs, “The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room” is Jemaine’s (played by the fearless Jemaine Clement) tearful tribute to Bret’s (the similarly-named Bret McKenzie) ex-girlfriend, who, upon suddenly appearing at Dave’s party, instantly becomes the object of Jemaine’s devoted affection. The yearning in Jemaine’s heart is beautifully transcribed into song, as he rattles off lines such as:

You could be a part-time model” and

I can’t believe I’m sharing a kabab with the most beautiful girl I have ever seen with a kabab.

More importantly, the ballad serves as a deep examination of Jemaine’s complex psyche and, thus, functions as the foundation for his character growth over the course of the rest of the season (this song is from Episode 1). One example is a line early on in the song, which shows Jemaine’s constant struggle with his ever-suppressed rebellious side; as these words delicately play of off Jemaine’s rather large lips, the listener can’t help but literally feel him fighting his demons in the name of love, summoned in response to Cupid’s calling. Jemaine crows:

I asked Dave if he’s going to move on you..He’s not sure..I said “Dave, do you mind if I do?”…He says he doesn’t mind…But I can tell he kind of minds..But I’m going to do it anyway.

Since I don’t want to ruin the entire song and since I have already written out almost half of the lyrics by now, please just watch the video.

My typing fingers a bit worn out after the above analysis, I’ll just sum this song up in a few words: a French diddy.

Flight of the Conchords & The Lord of the Rings

Recently, HBO caught up with the band after a gig on the station’s “One Night Stand” series and asked them about any furture Peter Jackson-collaberations. The band did not elaborate, but it is certainly not out of the picture! Here is a snippet of the interview and a link to the entire interview:

HBO: Nice. We heard about a ‘Lord of the Rings’ song you did, which is a natural for a New Zealand-based group. Can you tell us a little bit about that?

Flight of the Conchords: BRET We’re not doing it in the show tonight, but we wrote it for the Lord of the Rings. We tried to get the gig writing the theme song for the film. It didn’t happen.

HBO: I’m sorry. But there will be another one - a ‘Lord of the Rings IV.’

Flight of the Conchords: BRET See, no, we tried three times and they still didn’t use it.

After a year of testing, German researchers announced that they have perfected a method for inducing (and subsequently curing) autism. Peep this article from io9, a science-fiction blog, which cites the scientific article and then, more interestingly, describes some of the potential black-market niches it may fill: not only a adderall-replacement, allowing you to do nothing but “ignore your friends and do nothing but number-crunching for days” but also a valium-substitute, where people who want to take a break from having messy emotions about other people decide to unplug and enter a state where human relationships are no more important than inanimate objects.” Call your therapist ASAP!
